Store Audits

How to run a useful Shopify store audit

A repeatable audit process for Shopify stores that produces a prioritised action list instead of a long report nobody executes.

An audit is only valuable if something changes because of it. The common failure is a fifty-point document with every issue listed at equal weight, which means the team fixes the easy items and leaves the expensive ones untouched. A useful audit ends with a short ordered list and an owner for each line.

Work in four passes

  • Traffic pass — where visitors arrive from, which pages they land on, and what those pages promise.
  • Journey pass — walk the store as a first-time buyer on a phone, from ad click to order confirmation.
  • Technical pass — speed on mobile, broken states, search indexing, tracking accuracy.
  • Commercial pass — offer clarity, pricing presentation, shipping thresholds, retention touchpoints.

Score by impact and effort, then cut the list

Give each finding a rough impact rating and an effort rating. Anything high impact and low effort ships this month. Anything high impact and high effort becomes a planned project with a scope. Everything else goes into a backlog you are allowed to ignore. If your final list has more than ten active items, it is a wish list, not a plan.

Separate opinions from evidence

Mark every finding as either observed or assumed. Observed means analytics, session data, support tickets or a usability walkthrough back it up. Assumed means it is professional judgement. Both are legitimate inputs, but a plan built entirely on assumptions should be tested in small steps rather than rolled out at once.

Close the loop

Set a date to review what shipped and what it changed. An audit without a follow-up review turns into a document; an audit with one turns into an operating rhythm.
